Love and Monsters falls into our catch-up category, much like Save Yourselves. It’s a movie we missed for a while and wanted to finally get around to. While Kristin and husband/editor Will watched it a month or so ago, Wil still hadn’t gotten around to it. Well the time is now! And it wasn’t 20m into the rental before he just decided he’d buy it.
The movie follows our fave, Dylan O’Brien, on his trek across monster-infested land to find his long lost girlfriend. It doesn’t sound too out of the ordinary, and it’s not, but it’s the way it uses sci-fi tropes to elevate the film that makes it special. Love and Monsters is overflowing with heart. Everyone seems to care about each other and it’s crazy that something so simple can feel so fresh. After over a decade of Walking Dead preparing us to be back stabbed at every turn, L&M completely subverts that and it just feels good. Funny enough, one of the good ones is indeed Michael Rooker, who appears as a total POS on Walking Dead. A redemption arc we fully support.
So there’s no need to harp on even more about how much we loved Love and Monsters. We loved it very much. You can hear more specifics and see some more clips in the episode.
